Herschel was the third of six surviving children born to Isaac Herschel and Anna Ilse Moritzen. WitrynaHerschel was unusual among the astronomers of his day, because he concerned himself with the larger construction of the heavens and was far less interested in the ordinary business of professional astronomy, which meant making exactingly accurate position measurements. WitrynaIn 1866 John Herschel gave the Society the four volumes of his father’s register sheets of double stars (W.2/5) and the copies made by Caroline of the sweeps with the 20-ft telescope (W.2/3).
