The national project began in the mid 1970’s when a group of incarcerated men reached out in an effort to stem the violence in their prison. The project has been active in NE since 1997. Jails and prisons have become America’s de-facto mental health providers but are often unable to provide adequate care as part of a system that is not built to provide health services.
