WebbDefinition The Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) is a 14-item self-report measure designed to assess "the degree to which situations in one's life are appraised as stressful" (Cohen, Kamarck, & Mermelstein, 1983 , p. 385). Webbseems to hold some promise as a measure of perceived stress. Although Cohen et aL (1983) presented information on scale devel- opment, reliability, and validity in nonclinical samples, the existing information is limited in that this scale has not been evaluated psycho- metrically in a psychiatric sample.
